#Beauty tools: how to keep each item in top shape

When we need to look a million dollars most of us head straight to our make-up bag and start applying. To get the right look we generally need to use a range of beauty tools and any self-respecting glamour puss will have an impressive array of tongs, brushes, sponges and similar to help get it exactly right. Sometimes however, we forget that our make-up tools needs a bit of TLC too. They make us look good and it’s only fair we help keep them in good shape as well. No one wants to preen themselves with tools that aren’t fresh. Here are our top tips on keeping all your beauty accoutrements in good order from how to clean a hairbrush to storage advice for tweezers.

  1. Hairbrushes: Hairbrushes are one of the most important tools in the beauty kit. Hair would get knotty and tangled in no time if we weren’t able to brush and smooth out our locks regularly. Make sure you know how to clean a hairbrush properly otherwise your brush might not be up to the job. For a full guide to learn how to clean a hairbrush see step by step here.
  2. Make-up brushes: Often neglected when it comes to beauty tool maintenance it’s absolutely vital that you clean make-up brushes at least every three months to prevent them building up dirt or bacteria. To do so rinse in warm soapy water and dry with a soft cloth making sure to rub only in the natural direction of the fibres.Makeup brushes
  3. Hair dryers and straighteners: Electrical items can be a bit trickier to look after, but just like any other beauty tool they need some regular love. Be sure to have your dryer and straightening tongs checked for electrical safety regularly. Opt for models with in-built turn off mechanisms when they get too hot to help prevent over-heating leading to potential damage.
  4. Tweezers: A neatly plucked brow is important these days and most of us achieve this with a handy pair of tweezers. To keep yours in good nick always store it in a cool dry place. It’s often tempting to leave tweezers in your toothbrush holder, however these tend to be damp which can cause rust and blunting. A cupboard or dedicated holder bag is a much better option.

Those are our top tips when it comes to ensuring your beauty tools remain in tip top condition throughout their life. While we might not often think about the maintenance of these useful little things, a bit of effort now and then will keep your beloved hairbrushes, make-up sponges and tweezers working well long term.

Best #hair-related stocking fillers for #Christmas

Christmas is the time of year for fun, frolics and present giving. It’s a time when we all seem to be wracking our brains for ideas about what to buy. Whether it’s for your fabulously fashionable friend or the girl who has everything, it’s always nice to get some inspiration. With that in mind, check out some of the best hair-related stocking fillers that your hair-loving loved ones might well love!

Mini gift set: It’s Christmas and what would Christmas be without a gift set or two. It may be a shampoo and conditioner, hair styling, travel size or maybe even a luxury treatment set. Christmas mini gift sets always seem to always come in a nice presentation pack too – perfect!

Detangling brush: A detangling brush is an absolute must for any hair care fan and one of those gifts that will get constant use all year round. Get someone a detangling brush and although they might not be immediately overwhelmed, they’ll certainly be very appreciative in the long run! Depending on who you’re buying for, your budget and their tastes, there’s a lot of different styles and brands to choose from, and some pretty cool colours too. It’s also a handy item for anyone to keep in their everyday bag!

Hair bands: Yes, there are some really stylish hair bands out there but this is also a time to go for something a little funkier. After all we are talking about a stocking filler so there has to be an element of fun. How about a festive-themed Christmas decoration hair band? A novelty band that fits in with the personality of the person you’re buying maybe? There are so many hair bands to choose from and they should garner a laugh.

Clips, slides and pins: You could approach this stocking filler as a stocking up exercise and be practical by going for plain accessories. After all, you can never have enough accessories to hold your style in place, and they do go missing from time to time. Or you could be a little more creative and go for more stylish clips, slides or pins; the sort of accessories that compliment an outfit, rather than simply stop your hair from losing its shape.

Hairbrush and comb set: Rather than a brush or a comb, why not combine the two? Look out for gift-wrapped sets, products that can conveniently fit into a handbag or ones that you can add a special touch to with personalisation.

Hair chalks: Hair chalks allow you to temporarily alter the colour of your hair and are great fun. Packs usually come with an assortment of colours, are really easy to apply and should wash out with shampoo. Given that Christmas is party season they can make a perfect gift for the girl who loves a night out and a different look each time.

Hopefully that’s given you plenty of food for thought and some inspiration for your Christmas shopping. From gifts sets and pretty accessories to hair chalks and a detangling brush, you’ve now got plenty of hair-related stocking fillers to choose from.
