Short hair rescue! Three styles for any occasion…

As someone who likes to wear my hair quite long, I do enjoy the challenge of styling short hair and definitely understand that in-between stage, where it’s not quite long enough to tie back but also not short enough to look cool without loads of product!

As a hair and makeup stylist, it’s always good to have a few tried and tested tricks to save anyone from a bad hair day – especially when a wig or a hat is not an option!

The trick is for a short cut that you may be growing out: get it trimmed regularly so that it grows back strong and without breaking or those dreaded split-ends.

Here are some of my top tips that are perfect for just about any occasion:

  1. Experiment with colour. The great thing about trying a new colour on short hair is that you can grow it out quickly if you get bored and if you’re waiting for your hair to grow from a pixie crop into a bob. I’d recommend a few highlights for added texture to start with. There are some great wash-out hair chalk products and temporary colour mousses on the market for anyone who likes the idea of a dramatic colour change without the commitment.
  2. Beach waves look great on short hair, just below the ear lobes. Tie the hair into sections, take a small strand and create an ‘S’ shape curve in the middle of it or high up, leaving the end straight. I love this trick because you can get the perfect curl by using a curling tong ora straightening iron. This works best on hair that has not been washed for a day or hair that has texturising product on it. If your hair client has freshly-washed hair, not to worry! You can add some spray before you get curling. Twist the curl with your fingers to help it keep its shape for that perfect surf-babe swish.
  3. With short hair it’s easy to get away with a gelled-back look. I recommend this on hot days where you can skip the gel altogether and go for a wet-look leave-in conditioner or nourishing oil to help a short cut recover from heat treatment and styling.
